To say I’m a bit shaken by that is an understatement. I leave Bartolomějská hardly able to maintain my casual composure. I must have looked like a suspect who’s just been released. I had that same sensation of my limbs turning to jelly that I’m sure many person dragged into the Kachlíkárna feels.

Netopýrek told me he’d heard my clumsy attempts to be stealthy and sneak around the flat, knew it was me from the small exhalations I made, and, apparently, the tentative way I walked, because he knew I was still recovering from the wounds in my side and taking things carefully. They don’t call him the Sherlock Holmes of audio for nothing. The door I’d heard closing was me leaving. Only a minute or so later, that radio play I’ve just listened to began, when I had to have been out in the hallway. When I thought there was someone behind me.

I need to think, so I walk briskly away from HQ and back into the throng of Národní Třida. For once, the crowd doesn’t bother me. It’s nice to be an anonymous shadow moving through them, part of society but apart from it as well. That sound, though… It stays with me all the way down to Václavské Náměstí. All the way down into the grey world of the metro at Muzeum. The backside of a train disappears into the tunnel just as I reach the platform, and of course, it’s the one going the way I want, so I sit on the bench and wait, ignoring everyone around me.

What am I supposed to think? That the Koláč is haunted? All the things that have happened over the past two days dart about in my head, like they’re having a party. So many things I had filed under “unexplained” but am I really ready to accept that it might be supernatural? Am I seriously at the point of accepting the stuff we read in fairy tales when we were little is actually real?

Or is that what people want me to think? I remember back when I was with tech, we set up mics and receivers around this house in Rudná that we thought was being used as a storehouse for contraband being shipped into the country. Everyone in the area told us not to go near that place because it was haunted. People had seen weird lights, heard noises, and one man had allegedly been chased off the land by a skeletal figure who “glowed in the dark”.

Rott saw him too, and although he swears he didn’t, he almost pissed himself with fright before his hurt machismo forced him to stride up to the ghost and grab it by the throat. Turned out to be our smuggler’s cousin in a homemade costume (which his babička had made for him – it really was a family concern) and some glow in the dark paint, that’s probably given him cancer by now. But the ghost stories were enough to keep the locals from nosing around.
